Tanuki-bayashi

In this bit of sculpture, a tanuki dressed as a monk (as we will see, tanuki, along with foxes, were notorious for appearing in the guise of humans to cause mischief) drums on his enormous scrotum. Is he singing to the accompaniment, or perhaps uttering some other kind of sounds?
