
In 1927, stung by Jiang's sudden and largely successful attempt to wipe out the CCP, Stalin sent to agents to Guangzhou (Canton) to re-establish a worker's commune. It was a disaster, and all involved were killed, along with many entirely innocent victims such as these children. This photo and others like it were snapped by an U.S. diplomat and sent to the State Department. Despite the bloody situation in China, many Americans persisted in maintaining a generally rosy view of the situation there.
