Here are the two deities Futsunushi and Takemikazuchi shown in transit from the Kashima area (just north of present-day Tokyo) to Yamato's Kasuga Shrine. The Fujiwara "invited" these two deities to Kasuga in the eight century to bolster their supernatural power. Takemikazuchi was thought to be a manifestation of the Bodhisattva Fukûkenjaku Kannon, and Futsunushi was thought to be a manifestation of the Buddha Yakushi.
