As anxieties about mappô increased, we find a greater interested in topics such as starving ghosts, disease, and Buddhist hells. Above, a starving ghost (invisible) at the scene of a recent childbirth moves in to eat the afterbirth. Below is a typical scene from one of the many Buddhist hells.
