Images of Matthew Perry. There was a vigorous tabloid press in Japanese urban areas in the 1850s, and the first Japanese vessels to approach the American ships were small boats full of sketch artists for the major tabloid publishers. The Japanese images of Perry rely on classic Buddhist and folk iconography to make their impressions.
