It is no wonder that we don't find tombs of unknown soldiers prior to modern times. They are not really about unknown soldiers. These tombs are shrines to nations. A more accurate term for them would be something like "tombs of national imaginaries," but, of course, who would stand for such an outrageous name as that?!
