Empress Haruko depicted in her role/persona of teacher. Here she sits with students in a school for the daughters of the members of Japan's newly-created nobility (the Meiji state established a peerage system similar to that of Britain). The empress founded the school with funds from the imperial household. See the main text for a translation of the poem text in the upper left corner of the image.
