These two images are parts of Song-dynasty paintings (ca. early twelfth century) depicting the rites of state of the Zhou dynasty kings. Paintings depicting official rites in ancient times were common during this time, which is one indication of the great importance learned Chinese attached to the link between ritual conduct and good government.
