Images of Daoism as a popular religion. Click on each to see a larger version.
1. At left is an image of #Zhang Daoling,# the Han-era founder of Daoism as a popular religion, know regarded himself as a deity. He is often called the "Patriarch of the Celestial Masters." Here he rides a tiger, which probably reflects Buddhist influence.
2. In the center is an image of Daoist priests. Click on in and notice the yin-yang/8 trigrams graphics. On the back of the center priest's robes is a diagram of the universe.
3. At right is the head of a demon. A Daoist priest has pinned it down in a bucket of rice with a sword to render it harmless.
